Your bank has asked if you would like a debit card, however you are rather unfamiliar with debit cards. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with facts about debit cards and their benefits.

A debit card is not a credit card. In fact, your debit card can only be used if you have enough money in your checking account to cover a purchase. As the name implies, these cards are used to debit money from your account. A debit card will allow you to make purchases at merchants and also to withdraw money from your account using an ATM machine.

There are several potential reasons as to why you might want to obtain a debit card. When using a debit card, you will find that you are able to carry less cash with you. You also will not need to write a check every time you wish to make a purchase using funds from your checking account.

Many banks now offer Visa and MasterCard check cards. These debit cards are still not credit cards in the sense that you can never spend more money than is currently in your account. However, a debit card with the name of Visa or MasterCard will provide you with fast and easy transactions. You can use your debit card in the same way you would a credit card by swiping your card in the card reader at a store when making a purchase. You will then sign a receipt for the merchant and your transaction is complete.

Debit cards with the Visa or MasterCard logo are also useful when making online or telephone purchases. Many of these transactions require a credit card. If you do not have a credit card, your debit card will come in handy. You will be able to use your debit card to make these purchases as long as you have enough money in your account. When you are ordering online or over the telephone your debit card number will be used as the credit card number. You might have to enter the three-digit security code found on the back of your card. Without this debit card, people who do not have credit cards are often limited when it comes to online or telephone orders.

There are a couple potential disadvantages to using debit cards. In most cases they do not offer you as many features and benefits as a regular credit card. For instance, they might offer you less piece of mind if you have a problem with a purchase. When using a credit card you are typically protected if you order a product and it does not arrive or if the product is not as was stated in the description. You can dispute charges you make with your debit card as well, however, there might be times when your dispute does not result in reimbursement of your funds.

Depending upon the type of debit card transaction used at a store, your funds might not be withdrawn immediately. This can cause confusion if you are tying to keep an accurate checking account balance. Debit card transactions are withdrawn directly from your checking account. It is essential that you keep careful records of any purchases or payments made with your debit card.
Most stores and merchants have one of two types of debit card processing methods. You will make either and online or offline debit card purchase. When you obtain a debit card from your bank, you will need to select a pin code, which will be four digits. When using the “online” method of debit card processing you will swipe your card in a card reader and then be asked to provide a pin number. You will not need to worry about a delay in the funds being withdrawn from your account since the debit will occur right away.

When you have a Visa or MasterCard debit card, you will typically be using your card in what is considered an offline transaction. Your sale will be entered much like if you were using a credit card. You will swipe your card in the card reader, and you will not need to enter a pin. You will sign the receipt for the merchant. It might be a few days before you notice that the funds have been debited from your account.

If you have a debit card, you might notice that you sometimes have the option of entering your card as a debit or credit transaction. Sometimes people will select the credit option and proceed as if they were using a credit card. In this case a person does not need to worry about remembering and entering their pin number. Sometimes there are also fees associated with using your cards for debits. These fees, however, usually do not apply when completing the transaction as credit. The choice is really up to you and what you would prefer.

A debit card has more functions than a basic ATM card. When you have an ATM card without other features you will primarily be using your card only to withdraw funds at an ATM machine. ATM debit cards allow you to withdraw money at an ATM. However, you will also be able to use your card to make purchases at stores and other locations where debit cards are accepted. The money will be withdrawn from your checking account.

We discussed offline transactions earlier in this article. Offline debit cards are those that you will be able to use much like you would a credit card. The offline debit card will have the Visa or MasterCard logo and will have an account number. These cards have many more functions than a simple ATM debit card since you can use a check card much like you would a credit card. The check card does not have a value greater than your credit card balance. However, you can use the check card to make purchases without needing to write out a check. You can also use the check card to make purchases for transactions that require credit cards.

A debit card is worth considering for anyone who writes out many checks when out shopping. These cards make it quick and easy to make purchase and debit money from your account. Debit cards that are issued through Visa and MasterCard also all you to make purchases that require a credit card. Consider the facts about a debit card today in order to make an informed decision.
